Nalanda stands as a testament to India's glorious past as a global center of learning. Established in the 5th century CE, Nalanda University attracted scholars from China, Korea, Japan, Tibet, Mongolia, Turkey, and Southeast Asia.

The Grandeur of Nalanda

The sprawling campus covered an area of approximately 14 hectares, with eight separate compounds, ten temples, meditation halls, and numerous classrooms. The red-brick structures and towering stupas still evoke the scholarly atmosphere that once permeated this ancient university.

A Day in the Life of a Nalanda Scholar

Students studied a wide range of subjects including Buddhism, Vedas, logic, grammar, medicine, mathematics, astronomy, and art. The library, known as Dharmaganja, consisted of three large buildings and housed hundreds of thousands of manuscripts.

Visiting Nalanda Today

The Nalanda Archaeological Museum houses artifacts excavated from the site, including copper plates, stone sculptures, seals, and pottery. The nearby Nalanda Multimedia Museum offers an immersive experience of the university's history.
