Mahabodhi Temple, located in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, is one of the world's most revered Buddhist pilgrimage sites. It marks the sacred location where Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment beneath the Bodhi Tree over 2,500 years ago and became the Buddha. The temple attracts millions of pilgrims, monks, scholars, and tourists from around the world every year. Renowned for its magnificent architecture, spiritual atmosphere, and historical importance, the Mahabodhi Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and serves as a symbol of peace, wisdom, and compassion.
The Mahabodhi Temple stands at the site where Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment in the 6th century BCE. Emperor Ashoka visited Bodh Gaya in the 3rd century BCE and established one of the earliest shrines here to commemorate the sacred event. The current temple structure was largely built during the Gupta period between the 5th and 6th centuries CE, showcasing remarkable ancient Indian brick architecture. Over the centuries, the temple has undergone restoration while preserving its historical significance. In 2002, UNESCO recognized the Mahabodhi Temple Complex as a World Heritage Site for its outstanding cultural and spiritual value. Today, it remains one of Buddhism's holiest destinations and an important center for meditation, learning, and international peace.
